Kudos to Railways for preserving historical relics

With Elphinstone Bridge closed off, the hammer will soon fall on the Elphinstone Road station as well. However, there is a silver lining: a rare iron bell from the steam engine era, fixed under the bridge, will be preserved by the Western Railway (WR) team.

In addition to the bell, there are also stone plaques on the bridge and metal plates on the pillars and girders, dating back over a century. These plaques trace their manufacturing origins to the United Kingdom. Earlier reports by mid-day highlighted that these plaques will be saved, and efforts are underway to ensure their preservation.

The iron bell, located between platforms 1 and 2, is a popular selfie spot among commuters. According to a WR spokesperson, authorities plan to save the bell and are considering relocating and restoring it. There is an extensive heritage gallery at Churchgate Station, and the artefact may find a new home there.

What is heartening is that this bell, which has already been saved once before, will be protected again—along with the heritage plaques. This demonstrates a genuine respect for history and heritage, and a clear recognition of their value. We salute the Railways for taking this thoughtful initiative.

In the frenzy of redevelopment and infrastructure upgrades, such relics often face the risk of disappearing, being damaged, or perishing under the weight of cranes and hammers dismantling existing structures. Sometimes, they may even be stolen by criminals seeking to sell them.

It is vital to identify and preserve these historical artefacts, as they serve as important markers of our city’s past. They teach us valuable lessons and hold great cultural significance. By safeguarding these relics, we pass on this appreciation and respect for history to the next generation.

A bell or a plaque is more than just an object; they are milestone markers of Mumbai’s growth and transformation. Recognizing their importance and making efforts to keep our past alive are both commendable and necessary steps toward preserving our heritage.
