Bollywood actor Jacqueline Fernandez has approached the Supreme Court to challenge the Delhi High Court’s refusal to quash a money laundering case filed against her. The case, linked to the notorious conman Sukesh Chandrashekhar and involving Rs 215 crore, was initiated by the Enforcement Directorate (ED).
A Supreme Court bench comprising Justices Dipankar Datta and Augustine George Masih is scheduled to hear her petition on Monday, September 22.
### Legal Proceedings: Delhi High Court’s Decision
Earlier, on July 3, the Delhi High Court dismissed Fernandez’s plea seeking cancellation of the First Information Report (FIR) filed by the ED against Chandrashekhar in connection to the case. The court stated that only a trial court has the authority to decide whether an accused has committed a crime.
Following this, Fernandez challenged the High Court’s decision by filing a petition in the Supreme Court.
### Fernandez’s Defense
Jacqueline Fernandez has strongly denied all allegations against her, asserting that they are baseless and that she was unaware of Chandrashekhar’s criminal background.
The ED had named her a co-accused in the money laundering case, which involves fraud exceeding Rs 200 crore. According to the chargesheet filed by the ED on August 17, 2022, Fernandez allegedly continued to receive lavish gifts from Chandrashekhar despite being aware of his involvement in criminal activities.
### Allegations by Enforcement Directorate
The ED’s chargesheet further alleges that Fernandez did not verify Chandrashekhar’s claims while searching for him online and deleted certain data from her phone following his arrest. Additionally, the agency claims she initially withheld details of her financial transactions with Chandrashekhar and only disclosed them after being confronted with evidence.
It is important to note that the court has not passed any judgment regarding the veracity of these allegations. The judicial stance so far is that these claims do not warrant the cancellation of the case at this stage.
