Tamizhaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief and actor Vijay has ignited controversy by praising Velupillai Prabhakaran, the leader of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE). Speaking at a rally in Nagapattinam, Tamil Nadu, Vijay likened Prabhakaran to a mother figure for Sri Lankan Tamils.
“At the same time, our umbilical-cord kin. Eelam Tamils are suffering after losing a leader who showed them motherly affection,” he remarked during the event, drawing sharp reactions from various quarters.
**Political Impact Amid 2026 Assembly Elections**
Vijay’s comments come as he campaigns aggressively for the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. The Sri Lankan Tamil issue remains highly sensitive in Tamil Nadu, particularly among fishing communities like those in Nagapattinam.
Tamil Nadu hosts over 50,000 Sri Lankan Tamils living in refugee camps after fleeing the protracted civil war that began in 1983. However, the legacy of Prabhakaran is complex — he is also known as the mastermind behind the assassination of former Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi in 1991.
**Fishermen’s Concerns: Criticism of DMK Government**
Besides addressing the Sri Lankan Tamil issue, Vijay also criticized the current Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) government for its handling of fishermen’s problems.
“We are not like the DMK government that writes a long letter about the fishermen’s issue and then remains silent,” Vijay said bluntly, accusing Chief Minister M.K. Stalin of staying quiet after sending a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi regarding the fishermen’s concerns.
**Past Activism and Controversial Remarks**
This is not Vijay’s first public stance supporting Sri Lankan Tamils. In 2008, he participated in a hunger strike in Chennai protesting violence against Tamils in Sri Lanka.
His recent comparison of Prabhakaran to a mother and calls to “give a voice to the Sri Lankan Tamils” living in India have generated mixed reactions, stirring political debates and discussions about the sensitivity of the issue.
