Students warned a drink driving conviction can ruin J1 summer hopes

**Students Warned of Visa Consequences Following Drink or Drug Driving Convictions Ahead of J1 Summer 2026**

Students considering a J1 summer in the US next year are being reminded of the serious consequences that a drink or drug driving conviction can have — not just on their immediate summer plans, but potentially for life.

The Road Safety Authority (RSA), in partnership with USIT Travel and An Garda Síochána, has launched a social media campaign to raise awareness among young people. The campaign highlights that a conviction for drink or drug driving could prevent students from obtaining a J1 visa, which is essential for spending a summer working and traveling in the United States.

Running from September 22nd to October 23rd, the campaign uses a powerful video that contrasts footage of an Irish student left behind at home with his friends enjoying the adventure of a lifetime in the US. This visual storytelling reinforces the message that one reckless decision can lead to very different outcomes.

The campaign is being promoted across popular platforms such as Meta, Snapchat, and TikTok, aligning with the time when students typically begin researching, planning, and applying for J1 visas for summer 2026.

A J1 visa allows students to work in the US from May 15th to September 15th, with an additional 30 days allocated for travel.

**Statements from Officials**

Sam Waide, Chief Executive of the RSA, emphasized the significance of the J1 experience for students:
“The J1 is a rite of passage for so many students — a summer of work, travel, and new experiences. But a conviction for drink or drug driving can stop those dreams in their tracks. Beyond the legal consequences here in Ireland, students risk losing out on the opportunity of a lifetime abroad. Our message is simple: make safe choices on our roads and keep every opportunity open to you.”

Assistant Garda Commissioner Catharina Gunne added:
“All too often we still see the devastating impact of drink and drug driving. At its worst, it causes death, destroying the lives of loved ones, families, and friends. It may also cause life-changing injuries. A conviction for driving under the influence of any intoxicant may negatively impact futures and opportunities.”

She further stressed the importance of awareness among younger adults and students:
“They need to realise not only the impact and consequences of fines and driving disqualifications here in Ireland but also be conscious of the potential travel restrictions that come with a conviction — in particular, the possibility of being barred from travelling to the United States on a J1 visa, or facing restrictions when entering other countries.”

**Enforcement Measures**

An Garda Síochána continues to enforce drink and drug driving laws through mandatory checkpoints and random vehicle stops. Students and young drivers are strongly advised:

**Do not take the chance of being prosecuted by driving under the influence of any intoxicant, whether alcohol or drugs.**

Making safe and responsible choices on the road not only protects lives but also preserves opportunities for the future. Ensure your summer of work, travel, and new experiences is not cut short by one avoidable mistake.
