Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar: Youth Commits Suicide In Chikalthana Over Fear Of House Demolition

Tension prevailed in the Chikalthana area following the tragic suicide of a young man who feared that his house would be demolished due to the road-expansion drive initiated by the Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar Municipal Corporation (CSMC).

Rajeshwar alias Munna Sainath Navpute – Gote, aged 30, hanged himself on Wednesday night. The incident came to light on Thursday morning. Rajeshwar was reportedly distressed over the possibility that his house, which he had constructed with his hard-earned money, would be demolished as part of the ongoing road-expansion project.

CSMC has been carrying out road-expansion works across the city, which includes the demolition of certain properties. The Navpute family, natives of Chikalthana village, have their ancestral house near the Mahadev temple on the main road. They had demolished the old structure and built a new house on the same land around 2013–14. Rajeshwar and his brother were residing there.

Fearing the loss of his home, Rajeshwar took the extreme step of ending his life. Upon discovering the tragedy on Thursday morning, his family members, relatives, and villagers refused to take the body away. They staged an agitation on Chikalthana Road between 5:30 pm and 8:30 pm, protesting alongside Rajeshwar’s body.

The police and municipal corporation officials intervened and assured the protesters that appropriate action would be taken following a thorough investigation. Subsequently, the agitation was called off.

CSMC anti-encroachment squad chief Sanjay Suradkar also assured that Rajeshwar’s family will be provided with a house under the Prime Minister Gharkul scheme, offering some relief to the bereaved family.
