At least one person has been killed and nine others wounded in a shooting at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Grand Blanc, Michigan.
According to reports, the gunman rammed his vehicle through the front of the church during Sunday service, then began firing inside the building and set a fire. Officers engaged in a gunfire exchange with the shooter—identified as a 40-year-old Michigan man—and ultimately killed him at the scene.
Authorities expect to find more victims once the building is deemed safe to enter and a full search is conducted. Grand Blanc Township Police Chief William Renye stated that there were hundreds of people in attendance when the church was attacked.
The FBI has deployed 100 agents to the area to assist in gathering statements from witnesses. Police also plan to search the shooter’s residence as part of the ongoing investigation.
The motive behind the attack remains unknown at this time. Investigators hope to uncover clues during their search of the suspect’s home and other evidence collected at the scene.
A spokesperson for the Church, Doug Anderson, shared a statement saying, “The Church is in communication with local law enforcement as the investigation continues and as we receive updates on the condition of those affected. We offer thanks to the emergency responders who are assisting victims and families. Places of worship are meant to be sanctuaries of peacemaking, prayer, and connection. We pray for peace and healing for all involved.”
