Santa Clarita Deputies arrested a Lancaster man Sunday morning after he allegedly tried to break into cars in Canyon Country by punching through the windows with his fists, according to the Santa Clarita Sheriff’s Station.
The attempted car break-ins occurred around 9:15 a.m. at the 18000 block of Soledad Canyon Road, near a condo complex close to Jakes Way, Lt. Dustin Wieman with the Santa Clarita Sheriff’s Station reported.
Deputies responded after receiving multiple calls from residents who reported a man breaking into vehicles by smashing car windows with his bare hands. Upon arrival, deputies found two cars with shattered windows.
“The informant gave us a good description of the suspect,” Wieman said. When deputies located the suspect, they attempted to detain him, but he fled on foot.
The suspect, 37-year-old Devonaoux Chavez of Lancaster, ran about 200 feet before deputies used force to stop him. Chavez sustained minor injuries from the use of force, as well as additional cuts to his hands believed to be from smashing the car windows, according to Wieman.
Chavez was arrested on suspicion of attempted grand theft auto and was transported to a local hospital for treatment before being booked into custody.
Deputies said it did not appear that Chavez successfully stole anything from the vehicles, but they believe he was attempting to take the cars.
