**LAYER Designs MAZZU Modular Outdoor Sleep System**
The MAZZU Camping Mattress is an innovative modular sleep system designed for outdoor use by design studio LAYER, created in collaboration with sleep start-up MAZZU. Unlike traditional camping mattresses, this foam-free mattress features 72 independent spring units that adapt to the body, providing ergonomic support in a portable and repairable format.
Instead of conventional foam or inflatable pads, the MAZZU Mattress utilizes isolated, pre-compressed coil units encased in durable jackets. Each spring unit moves independently to conform to the body’s contours, accommodating various sleeping positions for optimal comfort.
Its modular construction allows users to assemble components easily using snap-fit connectors and paracord lashings. A slim topper offers surface leveling and additional softness, enhancing the overall sleeping experience. The color palette references typical outdoor gear, combining natural foliage tones with bright accents for improved visibility. The open structure design also highlights the engineering behind the spring units, giving the mattress a unique aesthetic.

### Compact, Repairable, and Eco-Friendly
Studio LAYER designed the spring units to nest compactly for convenient transport. The entire system—including the foldable base, spring modules, and topper—fits neatly into a wheeled case roughly the size of a standard cooler. This case can be repurposed onsite as either storage or a nightstand, adding versatility at the campsite.
Traditional foam-based mattresses have a significant environmental impact, contributing to global waste and chemical pollution. The MAZZU Camping Mattress is completely free of polyurethane foam and glue. Each part, from the base to the spring units and topper, can be individually cleaned, repaired, or replaced. This extends the mattress’s lifespan while aligning with circular economy principles to minimize environmental harm.
