Agartala: The Tripura government has suspended two officials following the escape of six inmates—five undertrial prisoners and one serving a life term—from Dharmanagar Sub-Jail in North Tripura district. The incident occurred in the early hours of Wednesday.
A Jail department official confirmed that the Inspector General of Prisons has suspended Dhananjoy Bhattacharya, Jailor, and Pallab Kanti Bhowmik, Warder. Disciplinary proceedings will be initiated against both officials in connection with the jailbreak.
The six inmates managed to escape after assaulting a jail guard with sharp weapons. The attack took place when jail personnel brought the inmates out of their cells for breakfast and daily ablutions. The injured guard, Bedu Miah, is currently receiving treatment at Dharmanagar District Hospital and is reported to be in stable condition.
An intensive search operation is ongoing to apprehend the remaining five fugitives. So far, Abdul Patta, one of the escaped inmates, was caught on Wednesday evening from South Chandrapur under the Dharmanagar police station.
North Tripura district Superintendent of Police Avinash Kumar Rai has been leading one of the search teams. All police stations and security posts across North Tripura and the adjacent Unakoti district have been put on high alert.
Authorities have also requested the Border Security Force (BSF) to intensify vigilance along the India-Bangladesh border to prevent the fugitives from crossing into Bangladesh. North Tripura shares inter-state borders with Assam and Mizoram, as well as an international border with Bangladesh. Exit points along these borders have been sealed to stop the escapees from leaving the state.
The five undertrial prisoners who escaped are Abdul Patta, Rahim Ali, Narayan Chandra Dutta, Rosan Ali, and Nazim Uddin. The sixth inmate, Sunil Debbarma, is serving a life sentence for serious crimes, including murder.
It is noteworthy that Narayan Chandra Dutta is a Bangladeshi national previously arrested in Tripura under the Passport and other Acts. Abdul Patta is a resident of Nilambazar in Assam’s Sribhumi district (formerly Karimganj district) and was earlier arrested under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985, for involvement in illegal drug-related cases.
