The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has announced a week-long celebration from October 3 to 9, 2025, to honor the recently designated status of Marathi as a Classical Language.
**State-Level Directive**
This initiative follows a state-level directive that declares October 3 as Classical Marathi Language Day. The entire week will be dedicated to raising awareness and fostering pride in the Marathi language and its rich literary heritage.
**Inaugural Lecture: “Classical Marathi — Proud Marathi”**
The celebrations will commence on Friday, October 3, with an inaugural lecture titled “Classical Marathi — Proud Marathi.” The session will be delivered by Dr. Prof. Narendra Pathak, a respected member of the Sahitya Akademi. The lecture will begin at 11:00 am in the Knowledge Centre on the third floor of the NMMC headquarters.
**Session on Orthography**
On Tuesday, October 7, at 11:00 am, noted author and ghazal poet Janardan Mhatre will conduct a session on “Orthography in Classical Marathi.” This session will highlight the importance of correct spelling and the pure usage of the Marathi language, emphasizing the preservation of its classical form.
**Quiz Competition**
A Quiz Competition focusing on Marathi language and literature will be held on Wednesday, October 8, at 11:00 am. Participants, including NMMC officials, staff, and literature enthusiasts, are invited to test their knowledge. Prizes in the form of books will be awarded on the spot to participants who answer questions correctly.
**Poetry Recitation Competition**
The week-long celebration will culminate on Thursday, October 9, with a Poetry Recitation Competition beginning at 11:00 am. Participants will recite classical Marathi poems by renowned poets, with each performance limited to five minutes. This event aims to showcase the beauty and diversity of classical Marathi poetry to a wider audience.
