Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav has ordered a statewide ban on the sale of Coldrif cough syrup following the tragic deaths of nine children in Chhindwara district. At least five of these children had consumed Coldrif syrup, which is manufactured by a company based in Kancheepuram district, Tamil Nadu.
Addressing the incident, CM Yadav stated, “The deaths of children due to Coldrif syrup in Chhindwara are extremely tragic.”
**Investigation Underway**
In response to the deaths, a state-level investigation team has been formed to conduct a thorough inquiry into the matter. This development follows an earlier decision by the Tamil Nadu government to ban Coldrif syrup from October 1, after similar child fatalities were reported in Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Rajasthan.
The Food Safety and Drug Administration (FSDA) of Tamil Nadu is currently testing samples collected from the manufacturer’s facility to check for toxic chemicals known to cause severe kidney damage, including Diethylene Glycol (DEG) and Ethylene Glycol (EG).
**Health Advisory Issued**
The Union Health Ministry has also issued an advisory cautioning against prescribing any cough and cold medications to children under two years of age, in light of the risks associated with these products.
So far, the reported deaths related to the syrup stand at nine in Madhya Pradesh, two in Maharashtra, and one in Rajasthan.
**Statewide Ban Extended**
The Madhya Pradesh government has extended the ban to cover all products manufactured by the same company that produces Coldrif syrup. An official order from the Office of the Controller Food and Drugs Administration, Madhya Pradesh, stated that “samples are found to be adulterated, since it contains Diethylene Glycol (48.6% w/v), which is a poisonous substance that may render the contents injurious to health.”
Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely as investigations progress.
