**Porsche 718 Boxster and Cayman to Receive 911 Model’s Flat-Six Engine**

Porsche is planning a significant update for its combustion-engine 718 Boxster and Cayman models. The German automaker has revealed that the new “top” versions of these sports cars could be equipped with the same iconic flat-six engine found in the renowned 911.
### Strategic Realignment at Porsche
This change is part of a broader strategic realignment announced by Porsche CEO Oliver Blume. Alongside the engine upgrade, Porsche is overhauling its electric vehicle strategy. Notably, the company has canceled its upcoming ‘K1’ electric SUV flagship and will continue producing internal combustion engine (ICE) versions of the Cayenne and Panamera models well into the 2030s.
Porsche will also cease development on the ‘Sport’ version of Volkswagen Group’s SSP platform, which was originally intended to underpin these new models.
### Responding to Market Trends
Oliver Blume highlighted shifting consumer preferences as a key factor behind these decisions, stating, “We have seen a clear drop in demand for exclusive battery-electric cars and we are taking that into account.” This market adaptation is prompting Porsche to bring more production and component similarities between the 718 and 911 models, particularly in their powertrains.
This approach aims to simplify manufacturing processes and improve economies of scale, benefiting both Porsche and its customers.
### The End of the Four-Cylinder Era?
The new top-tier 718 variants are expected to be the hardcore Spyder RS and GT4 RS trims, positioned above the forthcoming 718 electric models. Importantly, this shift likely signals the end of the four-cylinder era for these cars.
The current turbocharged 2.0-liter flat-four engine powering the 718 Boxster and Cayman does not comply with the upcoming Euro 7 emissions regulations set to take effect at the end of 2026. Transitioning to the flat-six engine not only aligns with these new regulations but also enhances performance and brand identity.

Porsche’s move to equip the 718 series with the legendary 911 flat-six engine reaffirms its commitment to driving excitement and performance, even as it navigates the evolving landscape of automotive electrification and regulatory challenges.
