**Porsche 718 Boxster and Cayman to Receive 911’s Flat-Six Engine**

Porsche is gearing up for a significant update to its combustion-engine 718 Boxster and Cayman models. The German automaker has indicated that the new “top” versions of these sports cars could be equipped with the iconic flat-six engine currently found in its legendary 911 lineup.
### A Strategic Realignment at Porsche
This development is part of a broader strategic shift within Porsche, announced by CEO Oliver Blume. Describing the move as a “strategic realignment,” Blume highlighted changes not only in the combustion engine lineup but also in the company’s electric vehicle strategy.
As part of this overhaul, Porsche has decided to cancel the upcoming ‘K1’ electric SUV flagship and will continue producing internal combustion engine (ICE) versions of the Cayenne and Panamera models well into the 2030s. Additionally, Porsche will halt development of the ‘Sport’ version of Volkswagen Group’s SSP platform, which was initially intended to underpin these new models.
### Responding to Market Trends
Blume explained Porsche’s rationale behind these adjustments: “We have seen a clear drop in demand for exclusive battery-electric cars and we are taking that into account.” This statement reflects Porsche’s adaptation to evolving consumer preferences and market realities.
In pursuit of greater efficiency, Porsche plans to introduce more commonality between the 718 and 911 models, particularly in terms of powertrains. This approach is expected to simplify production processes, streamline component sourcing, and improve economies of scale.
### The End of the Four-Cylinder Era?
The transition to the flat-six engine will likely affect the “top” tier variants of the 718 lineup, notably the high-performance Spyder RS and GT4 RS models. These versions are expected to slot above the upcoming 718 electric vehicles.
Importantly, this engine update also signals the probable end of the turbocharged 2.0-liter flat-four era for the 718 models. The current four-cylinder engine does not comply with the stringent Euro 7 emissions standards that will come into effect at the end of 2026, making the switch to the flat-six engine a necessary step for compliance and performance.
