Rangers sack Martin after 17 games

Russell Martin has been sacked as Rangers head coach after just 17 games in charge. The club stated that “while all transition periods require some time, results have not met expectations.”

The 39-year-old’s final game was a 1-1 draw at Falkirk on Sunday. Following the match, Martin was escorted away from the stadium by police after fans attempted to stop the team bus from leaving.

Martin had faced mounting criticism and opposition from Ibrox supporters amid a poor start to the season. It took Rangers until late September to secure their first Scottish Premiership win. Additionally, the club suffered a humiliating 9-1 aggregate defeat to Club Brugge in the Champions League play-offs in August.

As the domestic season enters its second international break, Rangers find themselves eighth in the Premiership, trailing league leaders Hearts by 11 points. Under Martin’s management, the team won just one of their seven league matches, drawing five. In total, he departs the club with five victories across all competitions.

Alongside Martin, assistant coach Matt Gill and first-team coach Mike Williamson will also leave the club.

In an official statement, Rangers said:
“Russell and his staff have worked exceptionally hard throughout their time at the club. We thank them for their efforts and wish them well for the future. Further updates from the club will follow in due course.”
