Gopal Vittal, Managing Director of Bharti Airtel and Chairman of GSMA, has underscored the urgent need for a new framework of trust and regulatory harmony in today’s digital age. Speaking at the Indian Mobile Congress 2025, Vittal highlighted that while India has made remarkable progress in achieving widespread connectivity, the next critical challenge lies in protecting users and enhancing institutional collaboration.
**Digital Challenges Ahead**
Vittal emphasized that “connectivity today is like a fundamental right.” However, he pointed out that beyond just connectivity, the focus must shift towards fostering trust, security, and inclusion in digital spaces. He sounded a note of caution about the rising threat of financial scams and cybercrimes, which are increasingly eroding public confidence in technology.
**A Collaborative Approach to Digital Security**
Sharing insights into Airtel’s proactive measures, Vittal revealed that the company has successfully blocked 48 billion spam messages and 350,000 fraudulent links through its spam detection initiatives. Despite this progress, he stressed that combating digital fraud cannot be achieved by any single company alone.
To address these challenges collectively, Vittal proposed the creation of new global institutions, such as a “fraud bureau,” which would enable stakeholders worldwide to work together in tackling scams and digital threats more effectively.
**Striking the Right Regulatory Balance**
Responding to these concerns, Pemmasani Chandra Sekhar, Minister of State for Communications and Rural Development, affirmed the government’s commitment to formulating regulations that safeguard users while fostering innovation.
He highlighted that emerging technologies—including semiconductors, quantum computing, artificial intelligence (AI), and 6G—are being developed with clear objectives and dedicated funding to ensure they benefit society responsibly and sustainably.
As India steps deeper into the digital era, the call for trust, robust security, and balanced regulation resonates louder than ever, paving the way for a safer and more inclusive digital future.
