Dead or Alive creator Tomonobu Itagaki passes away at 58

Tomonobu Itagaki, a legendary figure in game design, passed away this week at the age of 58. Known as one of the founding pillars of what Team Ninja is today, Itagaki created the iconic Dead or Alive series and directed most of its installments. He also helmed the 2004 reboot of Ninja Gaiden, further cementing his legacy in the gaming world.

Itagaki remained active in game development through his own studio, Itagaki Games, until his passing. His final message to fans and the industry reflects the passion and dedication he brought to his craft throughout his career.

Beginning his work at Tecmo in the early 1990s, Itagaki’s first credited role was as a Graphic Engineer on Tecmo Super Bowl. As mentioned, he created Dead or Alive and directed most of its series up to Dead or Alive Xtreme 2. Additionally, he led the reboot of Ninja Gaiden and contributed to its subsequent titles, including Ninja Gaiden 2, released in 2008.

In 2008, Itagaki left Tecmo amid legal disputes, suing the company and its president over unpaid bonuses and alleging unfair business practices related to the release of his games, especially Dead or Alive 2. Following this, he joined Valhalla Games, where he directed the cult classic Devil’s Third.

Eventually, Itagaki founded Itagaki Games, where he was presumably developing his latest project prior to his untimely death. His influence on the Japanese gaming industry remains profound, and his work continues to inspire developers and players worldwide.
