GOLOVIN, Alaska – A historic storm blasted western Alaska on Friday and Saturday with hurricane-force winds, over 50-foot seas, and coastal flooding not seen in decades. The powerful storm left homes flooded, roads washed away, and widespread power outages across the region.
What was once Typhoon Merbok transformed into a fierce northern Pacific storm as it raced nearly due north. It pushed through the Aleutian Islands on Friday and continued into the Bering Sea on Saturday.
This dangerous storm surge inundated coastal villages and towns, submerging them under several feet of water for hours, causing significant damage and disruption.
