This 1974 Volkswagen Thing is finished in a striking orange color with blue accents and is powered by an air-cooled 1.6-liter flat-four engine equipped with dual Weber carburetors. The engine is paired with a four-speed manual transaxle, sending power to the rear wheels.
The vehicle features a gray convertible soft top along with removable side curtains and a fold-down windshield. Notably, the sliding front windows are made of glass. The soft top has some damage near the left side of the windshield.
This Type 181 has undergone several modifications for added utility and style. It is equipped with a roll cage, a front bumper push bar, a front skid plate, an LED light bar, Jeep side mirrors, and receiver hitches at both the front and rear. The 15” EMPI wheels are fitted with BFGoodrich All-Terrain tires — 215/75 at the front and 30×9.50” at the rear. Bilstein shocks enhance the suspension, and braking is handled by drums on all four corners.
Inside, the interior boasts Simpson Racing front bucket seats and folding rear seats, upholstered in gray and black, all fitted with Simpson Racing latch-and-link harnesses for safety. Additional features include a Cobra CB radio and dual fire extinguishers. The four-spoke steering wheel sports a Wolfsburg crest and frames a 100-mph speedometer with an inset fuel gauge. Gauges for oil pressure, voltage, and coolant temperature are positioned to the right. Some paint peeling is evident in the footwells.
The original engine has been replaced by a 1.6-liter flat-four unit installed under previous ownership. According to the seller, approximately 100 miles have been added under their ownership, with the five-digit odometer currently showing 6,000 miles—though the vehicle’s total mileage remains unknown.
Acquired by the seller in 2025, this Volkswagen Thing is now offered at no reserve with an Arizona title in the seller’s name. Additional photos, including detailed shots of the underside, are available in the gallery below.
