X Will Allow Some Users to Request Inactive Usernames Through a Marketplace

X, formerly known as Twitter, is launching a new marketplace for usernames called the X Handle Marketplace. This platform will allow select users to browse and request inactive usernames, providing an innovative way to secure desired handles.

### How the X Handle Marketplace Works

According to a report by The Verge, the handles available through the X Handle Marketplace will be divided into two categories. Some handles will be free and typically include full names, multi-word phrases, or alphanumeric combinations.

On the other hand, rare handles will require a fee. X has stated that these premium usernames “may be priced anywhere from $2,500 to over seven figures, depending on demand and uniqueness.”

### Eligibility and Username Policies

The X Handle Marketplace is exclusively available to Premium Plus and Premium Business users. When a user acquires a new username through the marketplace, their previous handle will be frozen.

If the user decides to downgrade their X subscription, they will automatically resume using their old username.

### Strategic Move for Paid Subscribers

According to The Verge, the launch of the X Handle Marketplace is seen as a strategic move by X to increase the number of paid subscribers on the platform, enhancing revenue through exclusive username offerings.
