George Springer helped the Toronto Blue Jays soar back to the World Series for the first time in over 30 years with a clutch performance in Game 7 of the ALCS at Rogers Centre on Monday night.
In the bottom of the seventh inning, with the Blue Jays trailing 3-1, designated hitter Springer smashed a 1-0 pitch from Mariners pitcher Eduard Bazardo deep into the centerfield stands for a three-run homer. The 96 mph sinker was sent several rows into the crowd, igniting the Rogers Centre and giving Toronto its first lead of the night in a game they would ultimately win 4-3.
Springer’s heroics were particularly inspiring given his recent injury concerns. He had been hit in the right knee by a fastball from Bryan Woo in Game 5 and was a question mark to play in Game 6. Yet, when it mattered most, he delivered.
The Mariners initially took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning, but Toronto quickly responded with a run in the bottom half of the frame. Seattle then extended their lead with runs in the third and fifth innings, moving ahead 3-1.
In the decisive seventh inning, Addison Barger walked and Isiah Kiner-Falefa singled to put two runners on base. After Andres Gimenez executed a sacrifice bunt, Springer stepped up to the plate and became the game’s hero.
With this victory, the Blue Jays secure their first trip back to the World Series since winning the championship in 1993. Toronto will face the Los Angeles Dodgers, who are aiming to defend their title, with Game 1 scheduled for Friday.
