Portland Trail Blazers head coach Chauncey Billups, a Naismith Basketball Hall of Famer and former NBA Finals MVP, has been arrested in connection with an FBI investigation into alleged illegal activities linked to the mafia, according to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).
Miami Heat star guard Terry Rozier, as well as former NBA player and assistant coach Damon Jones, were also arrested as part of the operation. The FBI announced the arrests during a press conference on Thursday.
Billups faces charges related to poker-related gambling, while Rozier’s arrest involves gambling concerns within the National Basketball Association, per the FBI. Damon Jones was arrested for allegedly providing co-defendants with inside information, which they used to place bets on NBA games, according to ABC News.
Additionally, Jones and Billups are accused of participating in illegal poker games connected to at least three mafia families in New York, CNN reports.
In total, 31 people have been arrested as part of the FBI’s ongoing investigation. The case continues to develop as authorities uncover further details.
