CNN Anchor Christiane Amanpour Battles Ovarian Cancer Again, Urges Women to Heed Warning Signs
Veteran CNN journalist Christiane Amanpour has revealed that she is once again battling ovarian cancer, four years after her initial diagnosis. The disease has returned in a “fairly rare” form, but Amanpour remains optimistic about her outlook.
Speaking on Thursday’s episode of the “Changing the Ovarian Cancer Story” podcast, Amanpour shared, “I have it again but it’s being very well managed, and so this is one of the whole things that people have to understand about some cancers.” She disclosed that her cancer is now classified as “stage 1/2,” indicating it is in its earliest phase but has “adhered a little bit to my pelvis.”
Amanpour credited her gynecologic oncology consultant, Dr. Angela George, with informing her about the nature of her cancer and why she was “potentially lucky” to experience pain symptoms. “There’s often no symptoms so many women don’t know, so I feel that I was lucky,” she explained.
Her relapsed ovarian cancer appeared earlier this year, marking her third bout in four years. Amanpour has been undergoing a two-year immunotherapy treatment, which has helped bring the cancer under control. Dr. George confirmed that Amanpour’s cancer is currently in remission thanks to this regimen.
A source close to Amanpour revealed that she has been managing her treatment alongside her demanding schedule for CNN and her podcast, *The Ex Files with Jamie Rubin*, with little to no disruption.
Considered fortunate, Amanpour said her particular rare form of ovarian cancer has responded well to immunotherapy. At 67, she is urging women to be proactive about their health and seek medical advice if something feels wrong. “I wanted to say listen to your body because part of the reason I got such quick care was because I listened to my body and went straight to the doctors,” she advised.
Amanpour also revealed that she chose to speak publicly about her illness to help others facing similar challenges. She first disclosed her initial diagnosis back in 2021, stating, “I decided when I got back in front of the camera after four weeks—which included the surgery and a couple of weeks of recuperation before I started chemotherapy—I decided to say something because I actually wanted to do a service, not just to my viewers, but also to those who might be in a similar situation.”
Her announcement four years ago garnered an outpouring of support from colleagues and viewers worldwide.
Recent Controversy Amid Health Battle
Amanpour’s latest disclosure comes during a tumultuous period for CNN and its parent company, Warner Bros. Discovery. The seasoned correspondent had been off the air recently following backlash over comments she made regarding Israeli hostages.
On October 13, while covering the final release of captives held by Hamas, Amanpour stated that the hostages “were probably being treated better than the average Gazan, because they are the pawns and the chips that Hamas had.” The comment ignited widespread criticism and prompted an on-air apology hours later.
“That was insensitive, and it was wrong,” Amanpour admitted, recounting the difficult experiences of the freed hostages underground. Despite the apology, some viewers remained dissatisfied.
Washington-based investor James Patterson, the widower of corporate activist Evelyn Y. Davis and a Warner Bros. Discovery shareholder, wrote a letter to CEO David Zaslav demanding Amanpour’s dismissal. “As a stockholder in WBD, I urge you to fire Christiane Amanpour for her antisemitic statement that Israeli hostages were treated better than average Gazans,” Patterson stated. He revealed he owns 300 shares of the company and expressed no intention of accepting Amanpour’s apology.
As Amanpour continues her battle with ovarian cancer, she remains committed to raising awareness about the disease and encouraging women to pay attention to their bodies while navigating professional challenges.
