Katee Sackhoff has opened up about the challenging reception she faced when she was cast as Kara “Starbuck” Thrace in *Battlestar Galactica*. During the 2003 San Diego Comic-Con, as she arrived at Hall H for the show’s launch, Sackhoff was met with boos from the audience.
Recalling the experience in a podcast interview with *The Joe Rogan Experience*, she shared, “They had us in Hall H, and I was booed. I was booed!” The negative response surprised her, especially since the internet was still in its infancy. Without home internet access, she later went to an internet café to understand what was causing the backlash.
“The internet did not exist yet, mind you. It was brand new. You had to go down to the internet café and buy 30 minutes,” Sackhoff explained. “So I went down to an internet café because someone was like, ‘I guess they’re talking about the show on these message boards.’ And I was like, ‘What’s the internet?’ So I went on down. I logged on, and I saw this thread and just the hate that I was getting in this thread!”
Despite the boos and harsh criticism, Sackhoff admitted the reaction was upsetting. “I would be lying if I said it didn’t upset me. But luckily there were enough people championing the show that I really didn’t pay any mind to it.”
She reflected that if such negativity happened today, it might have been more difficult to handle. However, at the time, she had the “blissful ignorance of youth” and didn’t expect the show to last long, which helped her brush off the hate.
Even though the initial reception was rough, Sackhoff was still thrilled to be part of Hall H at Comic-Con. Over time, the negative buzz faded, and fans grew to love both *Battlestar Galactica* and her portrayal of Starbuck.
She later attended conventions where she was greeted with support and appreciation. “People would say, ‘I didn’t want to like it, and I love it,’” she added, highlighting how much the fandom had changed since those early days.
