Milei’s party wins big in Argentina midterm elections

The recent congressional election was closely watched by U.S. President Donald Trump, who pledged a $20 billion currency swap along with an additional $20 billion in private sector funding to Argentina, contingent on the strong performance of Milei’s party.

“If he [Milei] wins, we’re staying with him. And if he doesn’t win, we’re gone,” Trump stated in mid-October during Milei’s visit to the White House.

This political development has also brought attention to ongoing tensions in the meatpacking market, spotlighted by the Argentine beef controversy.

Milei’s potential victory paves the way for the full $40 billion in funding, as well as a possible agreement with Trump to import some of Argentina’s beef. Recently, Trump defended the plan by highlighting that beef imports from Argentina would help lower meat prices in the United States.
