A major update has arrived for one of television’s most beloved comedies as it prepares for a new chapter. The *Scrubs* reboot is moving forward at ABC with a key behind-the-scenes change that shifts the creative direction of the series ahead of production.
**Tim Hobert Exits *Scrubs* Reboot; Aseem Batra to Serve as Sole Showrunner**
Tim Hobert has stepped down as co-showrunner of ABC’s upcoming *Scrubs* reboot, according to Deadline. Aseem Batra will now serve as the sole showrunner for the series.
Hobert and Batra co-wrote the opening episode of the 20th Television series, which reunites the original cast including Zach Braff, Donald Faison, Sarah Chalke, Judy Reyes, and John C. McGinley. Sources say that Hobert’s exit is due to creative differences. However, he will remain credited as executive producer on the first five episodes.
The *Scrubs* revival received a straight-to-series order from ABC in July and held its first table read in late September. ABC is set to begin filming the third episode this week.
Bill Lawrence, who created the original 2001 series, is executive producing the reboot through his Doozer banner alongside Jeff Ingold and Liza Katzer. Due to his exclusive overall deal at Warner Bros. Television, Lawrence does not serve as showrunner.
In addition to Lawrence, Braff (who directed the premiere), Faison, Chalke, and Batra are executive producing the series. Both Hobert and Batra worked on the original *Scrubs*, with Hobert serving as co-executive and executive producer, and Batra as story editor and co-producer.
**Expanded Ensemble and Returning Cast**
Variety reports that the reboot has expanded its ensemble cast. Vanessa Bayer and Joel Kim Booster join as recurring guest stars, while *Scrubs* alums Robert Maschio and Phill Lewis will also make appearances.
The new intern class at Sacred Heart Hospital includes Ava Bunn, Jacob Dudman, David Gridley, Layla Mohammadi, and Amanda Morrow.
**Official Logline**
The official logline teases JD and Turk reuniting as doctors amid changing times, with “characters new and old navigating the waters of Sacred Heart with laughter, heart, and some surprises along the way.”
Fans of the original series can look forward to a fresh yet familiar *Scrubs* experience as the reboot moves closer to production under Aseem Batra’s sole leadership.
