Hundreds of Mainers receive morbid letter from MaineHealth

On Thursday, 531 MaineHealth patients received estate vendor letters mistakenly indicating that they were deceased. These letters included information intended for their next of kin about resolving their estate.

The problem arose due to an error in MaineHealth’s computer system that generates estate vendor letters. According to Caroline Cornish, Communications and Public Affairs Manager at MaineHealth, none of the patients were actually deceased.

In an email to the Press Herald on October 31, Cornish expressed MaineHealth’s sincere regret over the error. The organization has sent apology letters to all affected patients.

“At no time were these patients listed as deceased in their medical records and the issue has been fully resolved,” Cornish stated.
