Shai Gilgeous-Alexander led the Oklahoma City Thunder in scoring during the team’s 127-108 win over the Washington Wizards on Thursday night. However, amidst his impressive 31-point performance, Gilgeous-Alexander is believed to have been targeted by thieves.
On Friday, police launched an investigation into a home burglary at a property reportedly linked to Gilgeous-Alexander. The Thunder organization referred all questions to investigators in Nichols Hills, an enclave north of downtown Oklahoma City. Authorities have not confirmed who resides in the home, nor is it clear whether any items were stolen during the break-in.
Officers were called to the residence around 7:45 p.m., and local news outlets in Oklahoma City captured footage of police vehicles outside the property. According to a police statement, the suspects fled the area before law enforcement arrived. “While no arrests have been made, there is no reason to believe the public is in any danger,” the statement read.
This break-in follows a recent pattern of burglaries targeting professional athletes across the United States. Notable victims include Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, his teammate Travis Kelce, and Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow. NBA stars Luka Doncic and Bobby Portis, as well as NHL player Evgeni Malkin, have also been targeted.
Law enforcement officials have previously warned sports leagues about thieves striking on game days when players are away from their homes, often gaining entry by smashing rear windows.
