Game 7 of the World Series will showcase the extraordinary two-way skills of the best player on the planet, Shohei Ohtani. Hours after The Post’s Joel Sherman reported that the Dodgers planned to make Ohtani their starting pitcher for the decisive final game, Los Angeles made it official.
Ohtani will be going toe-to-toe against 41-year-old Max Scherzer, the three-time Cy Young Award winner and future Hall of Famer. Notably, Ohtani pitched in Game 4 and will be on just three days’ rest. However, MLB’s rules make starting him as a pitcher more logical than using him out of the bullpen.
If Ohtani, who will also start the game as the Dodgers’ designated hitter (DH), came in relief and did not finish the game, Los Angeles would lose its DH spot. But by starting the game as pitcher, regardless of how many innings he throws, the Dodgers retain their DH, allowing Ohtani to continue hitting.
In his last start against the Blue Jays, Ohtani took the loss, allowing four runs on six hits. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. hit a two-run homer in the third inning—the first home run Ohtani had allowed in the 2025 postseason—to give Toronto the lead for good.
At the plate, Ohtani has been impressive in the World Series, boasting a .318 batting average with a 1.364 OPS. Most of this damage came in the marathon 18-inning Game 3, during which he went 4-for-4 and reached base an incredible nine times. Since then, he is 1-for-10, after ripping a double in Game 6’s thrilling victory.
For fans without cable, a live TV streaming service is essential to stream the World Series. One popular option is DIRECTV, which offers over 125 channels, including FOX, the MLB Network, and ESPN Unlimited. Plans start at $49.99 per month, but new users can take advantage of a 5-day free trial to start watching immediately.
The Blue Jays will counter with Max Scherzer, who allowed three runs in that epic Game 3. During the ALCS, Scherzer delivered a gritty performance in Game 4 against the Mariners, famously fighting to stay in the game during the fifth inning in a fired-up “Mad Max” moment. He ended up pitching 5 2/3 innings to secure the win.
Scherzer also has World Series Game 7 experience. He started the decisive game in 2019 as a member of the Washington Nationals, tossing five innings and allowing two runs to help the franchise capture its first-ever World Series title.
This epic showdown between Ohtani and Scherzer promises to be a memorable conclusion to the baseball season.
