Data Corner: how governments are supporting research security

On October 28, Research Commissioner Ekaterina Zaharieva promised to embed research security in EU law. In doing so, she and her staff will have plenty of policy initiatives to build on.

According to the latest STIP Compass—a joint project by the European Commission and the OECD for monitoring science, technology, and innovation policies—there are currently 250 research security policies being implemented by governments and research funders across 41 countries.

Research security policies aim to prevent foreign interference, manage risks, and ensure trust in science. These policies are usually part of, and sometimes overlap with, broader research integrity policy frameworks, which are tracked separately by the STIP Compass.
