Open data: AI is here to help, and to help itself

Principles intended to make research data findable, accessible, interoperable, and re-usable (FAIR) have gained increasing traction since they were endorsed by the G20 nations in 2016. Despite this growing support, scientists still find the practical application of these principles challenging.

Tools to assist researchers in implementing FAIR principles are becoming more widely available. However, there are concerns that involvement by commercial actors may risk compromising the goals of open science.

According to Tereza Szybisty, research project manager at the European open science non-profit organization OpenAIRE, several barriers hinder the implementation of the FAIR principles. These include gaps in infrastructure, limited incentives for researchers, and a lack of dedicated data stewards.

These challenges vary widely between countries, institutions, and disciplines. “Some areas already have strong infrastructures and support systems in place, while others are still developing them,” Szybisty told Science|Business.
