Peak explores The Roots update today

Peak has proven to be a surprisingly big winner for indie studios Aggro Crab and Landfall. With more and more groups of friends jumping in and trying to survive the harrowing climbs ahead of them, the developers have released the game’s latest free update.

### The Roots Update: A New Challenge

The Roots update introduces a brand-new biome inspired by the lush forests of the Pacific Northwest, bringing fresh and unique elements to the gameplay. While players are still climbing in Peak, the environment has shifted — now, they’re scaling towering trees in a dense, mysterious forest.

Climbing these trees presents a significant challenge, regardless of how large your party is. Adding to the difficulty, giant insects like massive spiders roam the area, hunting players. These spiders can cocoon adventurers in webs and then drop them, potentially causing a long and perilous fall.

### Mushrooms and Mysterious Effects

Players will also encounter native mushrooms scattered throughout the forest. Eating them comes with a risk—they may cause unexpected effects, including a chance of zombification.

In addition to foraging, the Roots update also brings improvements to the cooking system. Players can now place non-food items in fires and observe various effects. The developers haven’t revealed what these effects are, encouraging players to experiment and discover surprises on their own.

Moreover, it’s now possible to cook away the poison from berries, making them safe to eat. However, be warned: you cannot remove toxins from mushrooms this way, so caution is advised when dealing with fungal finds in the forest.

For a full list of changes and updates, you can find the complete patch notes on Steam. Ready your gear and prepare for a new kind of climb—one that’s as thrilling as it is treacherous.
