Square Enix has confirmed upcoming layoffs and closures as it prepares to restructure its US and other Western operations once again.
Rumors about potential layoffs in Western offices had been circulating for some time, but the company recently confirmed these plans through a financial presentation posted on its investor relations website. The presentation outlined the decision to reduce its presence overseas and re-prioritize resources back in its home market of Japan.
Western operations for Square Enix have been on a decline for quite a while. In 2022, the company sold off several of its Western studios, including Crystal Dynamics, Eidos, and Square Enix Montreal.
Additionally, Square Enix has had to shift its strategy before, moving away from exclusive titles to multiplatform releases after experiencing slow initial sales with Final Fantasy 7: Rebirth.
This latest restructuring highlights the company’s focus on strengthening its core business in Japan while scaling back its Western ambitions.
