Trump urges Republicans to end Obamacare, send funds straight to ‘the people’ as gov’t shutdown drags on

President Trump on Saturday urged Senate Republicans to end Obamacare and redirect federal health care spending “directly to the people,” as the government shutdown entered its 38th day.

“I am recommending to Senate Republicans that the Hundreds of Billions of Dollars currently being sent to money sucking Insurance Companies in order to save the bad Healthcare provided by ObamaCare, BE SENT DIRECTLY TO THE PEOPLE SO THAT THEY CAN PURCHASE THEIR OWN, MUCH BETTER, HEALTHCARE, and have money left over,” Trump wrote on his Truth Social account.

“In other words, take from the BIG, BAD Insurance Companies, give it to the people, and terminate, per Dollar spent, the worst Healthcare anywhere in the World, ObamaCare,” he continued.

Trump’s comments came as the Senate held a rare Saturday session after a deal collapsed that would have temporarily reopened at least three federal agencies. The stalemate continues over funding the government, with negotiations focused on Obamacare insurance subsidies—a key issue for Senate Democrats. Democrats have refused to back a House-passed bill to reopen the government unless it addresses subsidies that are set to increase at the start of the year.

On Friday, Democrats rejected a new Republican proposal to fully fund three agencies while passing short-term funding for the rest of the government. In response, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer proposed temporarily reopening the government and extending existing government health care subsidies for one year. Senate Republicans, however, refused to accept the plan, stating they would only negotiate on subsidies after the government is reopened.

President Trump also used his platform to call for an end to the Senate filibuster, a rule that requires a 60-vote supermajority to pass most legislation, including any bill to reopen and fund the government. However, many Senate Republicans are hesitant, fearing that eliminating the filibuster could backfire if Democrats regain control of the chamber.

The ongoing government shutdown is having increasingly significant effects nationwide. Americans are bracing for airport chaos, as airlines cancel hundreds of flights and struggle to schedule air traffic controllers—many of whom are working without pay.

As the standoff drags on, pressure is mounting on lawmakers to find a solution that addresses both government funding and the future of federal health care spending.
