Maine women’s soccer falls in first round of NCAA tournament

Rajanah Reed scored 15 minutes into the first half, helping the University of Central Florida secure a 2-0 victory over the University of Maine in the first round of the NCAA Division I women’s soccer tournament on Friday in Orlando, Florida.

The Black Bears suffered a first-round tournament loss for the third consecutive season, concluding their year with a 6-8-4 record. Central Florida, on the other hand, improved to 12-3-5 and will advance to face No. 2 Duke in the second round. The Blue Devils earned their spot by defeating Elon 3-0 on Friday.

Maine earned their tournament berth by beating Vermont 3-2 (4-3 in penalty kicks) in the America East Conference championship game.

In addition to Reed’s early goal, Hannah Boughton added a second-half goal for Central Florida. On the defensive end, Elena Barenburg stopped three shots for Maine, while Genesis Perez Watson made two saves for Central Florida.
