South Carolina death row inmate Stephen Bryant’s last meal revealed before he’s executed by firing squad

**South Carolina Executes Stephen Bryant by Firing Squad**

A South Carolina firing squad executed Stephen Bryant, 44, on Friday, marking the third execution by this method in the state this year. Bryant was pronounced dead at 6:05 p.m. after a team of three prison employees, each armed with live ammunition, carried out the execution.

Bryant was convicted of killing three people over a span of five days in a rural area of South Carolina in 2004. He chose to be executed by firing squad over lethal injection or the electric chair. Before the execution, Bryant made no final statement and briefly glanced toward the 10 witnesses present before a hood was placed over his head.

Approximately 55 seconds after the shots rang out, Bryant remained silent. The red bullseye target, which was placed over his heart, flew forward from his chest. He exhibited a few shallow breaths and a final spasm just over a minute later. A doctor examined him with a stethoscope for one minute before officially pronouncing him dead.

Following the execution, a media witness reported that a pool of fluid appeared on Bryant’s chest where he had been shot. Three victims’ family members witnessing the execution held hands during the procedure.

Bryant is the seventh person executed in South Carolina over the past 14 months following a 13-year pause in executions due to a lack of lethal injection drugs. Republican Governor Henry McMaster denied clemency for Bryant; notably, no South Carolina governor has granted clemency since executions resumed nationwide in 1976.

### Final Meal and Personal Background

For his final meal, Bryant requested a spicy mixed seafood stir-fry, fried fish over rice, egg rolls, stuffed shrimp, two candy bars, and German chocolate cake.

Bo King, a lawyer who works on death penalty cases in South Carolina, shared insight into Bryant’s troubled past. King stated that Bryant suffered from a genetic disorder and was a victim of sexual and physical abuse by relatives. Additionally, his mother’s binge drinking caused permanent damage to his body and brain.

“Mr. Bryant’s impairments left him unable to endure the tormenting memories of his childhood,” King wrote. He added that Bryant “showed grace and courage in forgiving his family and great love for those in and outside of his prison.”

“We will remember his unlikely friendships, his fierce protectiveness, and his love for nature, the water, and the world,” said King, highlighting Bryant’s positive qualities despite his troubled life.

### The Firing Squad vs. Lethal Injection

The firing squad carries a long and violent history worldwide. It has historically been used to punish mutinies, desertion in armies, frontier justice in America’s Old West, and as a tool of political repression in regimes like the former Soviet Union and Nazi Germany.

Recently, the firing squad has experienced a revival in the U.S., with some lawmakers arguing it is the quickest and most humane execution method. This resurgence is partly due to multiple botched executions involving lethal injection drugs and difficulties states face in obtaining these drugs.

South Carolina’s 13-year halt on executions was because of challenges securing lethal injection drugs. The state resumed executions in September 2024, executing four men via lethal injection and three by firing squad since. The electric chair remains legal in South Carolina, along with several other states.

However, Bo King criticized all seven recent executions, calling them “brutal and shameful” and stating, “None has made South Carolina safer or more just.”

Other states with recent firing squad executions include Utah, which last conducted one in 2010. The method is also legal in Idaho and as a backup in Oklahoma and Mississippi.

### The 2004 Killings

Bryant admitted to killing Willard “TJ” Tietjen in October 2004. He approached Tietjen’s secluded home in rural Sumter County, claiming car trouble before fatally shooting him multiple times.

Following the murder, Bryant answered Tietjen’s phone, informing his wife and daughter that he was the prowler and that he had killed their family member, according to prosecutors.

Bryant also killed two other men during this period. He offered them rides, then shot them in the back when they stopped to urinate along a rural road.

During the investigation, law enforcement officers stopped nearly everyone driving on dirt roads east of Columbia, warning residents to be cautious of strangers seeking help.

### Execution Statistics

Stephen Bryant is the 43rd person to be executed by court order in the U.S. so far this year. At least 14 others are scheduled for execution through the remainder of 2025 and into 2026.

He is also the 50th person executed in South Carolina since the state reinstated the death penalty 40 years ago.

### What Happens During a Firing Squad Execution?

The execution takes place in the prison’s death chamber, where fewer than a dozen witnesses sit behind bulletproof glass. The condemned person is strapped into a chair, and a doctor places a white square with a red bullseye target over their heart.

The prisoner’s lawyer may read a final statement. Then a prison employee places a hood over the prisoner’s head and pulls open a black shade, revealing the firing squad.

Without any visual or audible warning, the shooters — armed with high-powered rifles and positioned about 15 feet away — fire simultaneously.

Within minutes, a doctor examines the prisoner and declares death.

In a prior firing squad execution, lawyers argued that the shooters nearly missed the heart of Mikal Mahdi. They claimed that because the shots barely struck the bottom of his heart, Mahdi endured agonizing pain for several times longer than if the heart had been directly hit.
