TikTokers Are Putting Their Family Members on Blast with Hilarious Text Messages
A popular trend on social media has TikTok users sharing the funniest and most relatable text messages they receive from their family members. From overly concerned moms to dads’ out-of-the-box jokes, creators are posting screenshots of these entertaining conversations with parents, siblings, and others under the theme of messages you just have to “read and move on.”
One viral video that has gained over 700,000 likes comes from Audrey Saxton, a 27-year-old creator based in Dallas, Texas. In her post, she shared a screenshot of a humorous exchange with her father. It began with a reminder to wish her mother a “happy mom day.” However, when Audrey asked if there were any pictures of her as a baby, her dad surprised her with the blunt reply: “Who is this?”
“Sometimes you have to read your dad’s text and move on,” Audrey captioned the screenshot.
Speaking to TODAY.com, Saxton revealed that she responded to her dad’s message with “15 question marks.” True to classic dad joke style, he quickly reassured her, saying he was “just kidding.” Audrey explained, “Our text messages never make any sense. They are always shorthanded or someone’s responding days later, and I knew that we would have something funny.”
Another viral clip features 25-year-old Rania Saleh from Ohio, who shared a heartwarming and funny text exchange with her 16-year-old niece, Riyah. In the conversation, Riyah told Saleh she missed her, to which Saleh responded, “I actually miss you more.” Riyah then explained her sudden thoughtfulness with an unexpected reason:
“I thought about you today bc in ap psych we learned about how people’s mental and physical health starts to decline in their mid twenties.”
Saleh told TODAY.com that she burst out laughing after reading the message. “I gasped and just died laughing! I was like, wow, I guess I really am entering my mid-20s but I’m going to prove her psych teacher wrong! I’m happy she thought of me, but I was just shocked that that’s what reminded her to text me and check in!” she said.
Though the message was funny, Saleh also found it sweet. She shared the text with her siblings, including Riyah’s mother, and everyone agreed, “Yup! That sounds like something Riyah would send.” The message truly made everyone’s day.
The “read and move on” trend resonates with many social media users for its relatability. Oluwaseye Oyelowo, a 25-year-old from Atlanta, Georgia, decided to join in the fun by roasting her 22-year-old sister, Oluwasayo.
In her TikTok post, Oluwasayo suddenly texted her older sister: “When do you get paid and how much can I get?”
Oluwaseye shared with TODAY.com, laughing, “Growing up, it was mainly my mom providing for us. Now that I’m working, I always make it be known that they can ask for anything, just to help remove a load off our mother. So yes, that is the normal for us.”
She added, “She’s very forward with her requests, and I just chuckle because I know her and read her message in her voice.” Sometimes, as Oluwaseye captioned her video, “you have to look at your sister’s text message and move on with your day.”
The video went viral and even prompted a funny reaction from Oluwasayo. “I called my sister and said, ‘You’re famous,’” Oluwaseye recalled. “And she said she’s putting interest on the money she wanted me to give for using her.”
This trend highlights how the quirks and candid moments in family communications can bring laughter and a deeper sense of connection between loved ones—and sometimes, make for viral content that everyone can enjoy.
