Michigan blasted Hannah Hidalgo and No. 18 Notre Dame 93-54 in the Shamrock Classic on Saturday, marking the worst loss for the Fighting Irish in more than two decades.
Three days after Hidalgo scored a school record 44 points and set an NCAA record with 16 steals, the Wolverines led wire-to-wire on the Wayne State campus. They limited Hidalgo to just 12 points on 4-of-21 shooting with seven turnovers. Hidalgo, who has scored in double figures in all 71 games of her career, managed to convert a three-point play with 2:21 remaining in the game.
Mila Holloway contributed 12 points, Syla Swords added 11, and Ashley Sofilkanich scored 10 for Michigan (3-0). Swords also pulled down nine rebounds, while Brooke Quarles Daniels grabbed 10 boards. The Wolverines dominated the glass with a 50-28 advantage, outscoring Notre Dame significantly on second-chance points (19-5) and points in the paint (50-26).
For the Fighting Irish (3-1), Cassandre Prosper led the scoring with 17 points, and KK Bransford added 15.
Swords hit consecutive three-pointers late in the first quarter to give Michigan a 17-10 lead. Early in the second quarter, Olson made two layups while Swords and Holloway each converted three-point plays within 30 seconds, extending the Wolverines’ advantage to 28-15. Michigan pushed the lead to 19 points before heading into halftime with a 46-29 edge.
The Wolverines sealed the victory with a 16-0 run in the fourth quarter. Michigan shot an efficient 50% from the field, while Notre Dame struggled at 28%, going just 2 for 22 from behind the arc.
Up next, Michigan returns home on Tuesday to face Binghamton, followed by a matchup against No. 1 UConn at the Hall of Fame Women’s Showcase in Uncasville on Friday. Notre Dame returns to campus to play No. 8 Southern Cal on Friday.
