Somehow, ‘Sharknado’ Will Return With an Origin Movie

Nothing is truly dead and gone these days, and that now includes Sharknado. Of all things, Syfy’s horror-disaster series is making a comeback with, you guessed it, an origin story. Dubbed *Sharknado Origins*, the seventh entry in the franchise is coming courtesy of B-horror studio The Asylum.

Per Variety, this new film will begin production later in 2025 with Anthony Ferrante at the helm. Ferrante previously directed the first six *Sharknado* movies, so fans can expect his signature style to return.

As far as casting goes, details will be revealed “soon.” The two leads will play young versions of Fin and April, the main couple originally portrayed by Ian Ziering and Tara Reid. The film opens as the two have just met for the first time and are entering the throes of summer love.

But before Fin can offer a promise ring to affirm their relationship, the classic *Sharknado* chaos ensues: cyclones bring aquatic carnivores out of the ocean and toward the people on the beach and around town, presumably leading to a whole bunch of murders. So Fin will have to do what he started doing (technically) back in 2013: kick ass, kill sharks, and get the girl.

The original *Sharknado* was a hit that Syfy turned into a full franchise, complete with three spinoffs. These include *Lavalantula*, its sequel *2 Lava 2 Lantula*, and *2025 Armageddon* — the latter of which ironically released in 2022.

At the moment, it’s unclear if *Sharknado Origins* will find its way back to Syfy like its predecessors or debut somewhere new. However, The Asylum hopes to have the film out sometime in summer 2026.
