The Alabama Department of Education released its annual school report cards last week, providing a numerical and letter grade assessing the performance of schools throughout the state. Both Roanoke City Schools and the Randolph County school systems received overall B grades, with Roanoke scoring an 89 and the county schools receiving an overall score of 84. For Roanoke that score is unchanged from a year ago, while the county school system showed a four-point improvement from last year. Schools are assessed in six general categories academic achievement, academic growth, graduation rate, progress in English language proficiency, chronic absenteeism and college and career readiness. The academic achievement score is the one that tends to get the most attention because it is typically lower than scores in other categories. But the complex methodology of calculating that score as compared to the other categories is a big reason why. What you need to know is that that number is based on standardized test scores throughout the system and reflects how well students did collectively on those tests. For reference, the average state score for academic achievement is 67. Roanoke City Schools’s score this year was just below that at 64. 65 while the county schools came in at 62. 23 in that category. Also, the progress in English language proficiency number is not calculated for all schools since it measures the progress of students who are learning English while in school. Not every school has English learning programs. Wedowee Middle School is the only school in Randolph County that received a score in that category. And lastly, for obvious reasons college and career readiness and graduation rate are only calculated for high schools. The highest scores in the county by school Academic achievement: Knight-Enloe Elementary 81. 51 Academic growth: Knight-Enloe Elementary, Wedowee Elementary, Woodland Elementary, Wedowee Middle (tie) 100. 0 Graduation rate: Handley High School 98. 13 Chronic absenteeism: Rock Mills School 2. 65 College and career readiness: Handley High School 100 The lowest scores in the county by school Academic achievement: Randolph County High School 48. 48 Academic growth: Randolph County High School 85. 88 Graduation rate: Randolph County High School 87. 01 Chronic absenteeism: Wedowee Elementary 20. 74 College and career readiness: Randolph County High School 85.
