Kathmandu, November 21: India has provided 10 Beily bridges to Nepal. Minister for Physical Infrastructure and Transport, Kulman Ghising, has said that India has continued to provide significant support in the development of roads and other physical infrastructure. Speaking at a program organized in Hetauda on Thursday to hand over Bailey bridges provided by the Government of India for emergency use during disasters, Minister Ghising stated that India has been consistently assisting Nepal’s sustainable development. To reconnect various parts of the country cut off due to floods and landslides, the Government of India has granted Nepal an additional 10 Bailey bridges. India had provided 10 Bailey bridges last year as well. Those bridges have been brought into use along the Kanti Lokpath and in the districts of Ilam, Dolakha, Ramechhap, among others. The Bailey bridges were provided by the Indian government at the request of the Government of Nepal. This year, India has already made one of the bridges available as the first installment of its grant, while the remaining nine bridges are in the process of being delivered. At the program, India’s Ambassador to Nepal, Naveen Srivastava, formally handed over the Bailey bridge to Minister Ghising. At the handover ceremony, Minister Ghising said that the Tribhuvan Highway, Postal Highway, and other east-west and north-south routes built with India’s support have expanded transportation access and connected citizens to services and markets. He added that these highways have contributed to regional and national connectivity while supporting overall development. “India has been supporting Nepal in education, health, infrastructure development, scholarships, and other sectors,” Minister Ghising said. “People-to-people relations between Nepal and India have long existed. India has been a reliable and trustworthy partner in Nepal’s development.” Recalling India’s swift rescue and relief assistance during the devastating earthquake, floods, and landslides, Minister Ghising added, “The Government of India has played an important role in cross-border rail connectivity, especially in the Janakpur-Kurtha-Bijalpura-Bardibas line and the expansion of the Jogbani-Biratnagar corridor.” He mentioned that Nepal and India can cooperate in the future on green infrastructure, climate-resilient transport systems, and digital connectivity. He stated that the lack of availability of longer Bailey bridges in the market had caused difficulties, and therefore India’s assistance in providing such bridges was crucial. He said that Nepal had received Bailey bridges from India measuring more than 70 meters in length. Director General of the Department of Roads, Bijaya Jaishi, said that India’s support has been vital in keeping roads damaged by natural disasters operational. The Bailey bridges provided by India are 70 meters long and single-lane. Among the 10 bridges provided this year, five will be placed under the Hetauda Road Division Office and five under the Biratnagar Office. People’s News Monitoring Service.
