Good Sports: Orosi High School running back dominating with championship hopes

OROSI, Calif. (KFSN) — Jason De La Cruz is one of the best running backs in the Central Valley. The senior is ranked first in the section and fourth in California in total rushing yards, coming off a four-touchdown game to get his Cardinals to the Division VI semis. “The success for my senior year, I didn’t think I would do this good coming back from an injury,” he said. Jason missed his entire junior season after breaking his fibula and tibia. Coming back for his final year was never in question. Head Coach Ben White is a reason for Jason’s confidence. “He’s been telling me to work out, do everything I can to make sure my leg is 100% and he’s always been pushing me to do my best,” De La Cruz said. As a former back himself, coach White’s rushing attack is an Orosi specialty. “We do things at Orosi that other places don’t do,” White said. In his nine years with the Cardinals, Coach White has had five running backs rush for over 2, 000 yards. “If you’re the starting running back at Orosi High School, that means something,” White said. “You’re going to be one of the best running backs in the Valley, and we’ve proved that year after year.” Before Friday’s semi-final game against Mira Monte, De La Cruz is a yard away from 2, 400 rushing yards. The Cardinals are facing another running back in the 2, 000-yard club. De La Cruz and the Cards host the Lions, with the winner headed to the Division VI championship game.
