Authorities confirm fatal shooting near Cloverdale; suspect found

Authorities confirmed that a reported shooting Saturday night near Cloverdale was a homicide and that deputies have tracked down the suspected shooter, according to the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office. Deputies responded about 4: 50 p. m. to a reported shooting on Cloverdale Heights Way, near northwest Cloverdale, according to the sheriff’s office and Cloverdale Police Department which assisted in the call. Neither agency immediately identified when the gunshot victim died, but the sheriff’s office confirmed the killing late Saturday. The suspected shooter, Cloverdale resident Lawrence Cassidy, fled before authorities arrived, Cloverdale police said. Deputies later located Cassidy in Santa Rosa, according to a release posted 9 a. m. Sunday. The agency did not say if Cassidy was in custody. About 2: 20 a. m. Sunday, Santa Rosa police issued an alert asking residents along Brush Creek Road between Shadow Hill Drive and Normandy Street to shelter in place for “police activity.” The alert expired about 5: 30 a. m. Sonoma County sheriff’s Sgt. Juan Valencia confirmed this “activity” was connected to the homicide investigation, but did not elaborate, saying more information would be released Sunday afternoon. This is a breaking story. More information will be added.
