Car crashes into Boston Common near Frog Pond, 1 hospitalized

A vehicle crashed into the Boston Common Wednesday morning after the driver appeared to experience a medical emergency, police said.

The crash occurred at the intersection of Beacon Street and Walnut Street around 10:59 a.m., near the Frog Pond, the Boston Police Department reported. According to WCVB, the car sped down Walnut Street, crossed Beacon Street, and slammed into the stairs leading to the Common.

Boston police indicated that the driver seemed to be having a medical emergency, which contributed to the crash. The driver was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, the department added.

“Our thoughts are with the individuals involved in this morning’s accident on the Boston Common,” Friends of the Public Garden President Liza Meyer said in a statement.

Meyer noted that the stairs and the surrounding masonry sustained noticeable damage. Her organization is “working closely with the City to assess the impact and support timely repairs so the area can be safely and fully accessible again.”

This is not the first vehicle incident in the area. In 2014, a 60-foot flatbed truck descended the same stairs after the driver’s brakes failed while trying to leave Beacon Hill.

“Our shared goal is to restore this space to full use as quickly as possible, ideally ahead of the busy summer season,” Meyer added.
