The Madras High Court is scheduled to hear a petition today filed by a victim of the deadly stampede that occurred during actor-politician Vijay’s rally in Karur. The petition seeks to ban public meetings organized by Vijay’s party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), until a thorough investigation into the tragedy is completed.

The disaster happened in Veluswamypuram, Karur, where a crowd of nearly 27,000 surged forward after Vijay’s delayed arrival, leading to a fatal stampede. The incident claimed the lives of 40 individuals, including women and children, and left nearly 100 others injured. Tamil Nadu’s Director General of Police, G Venkataraman, admitted that despite the unexpectedly massive turnout, only 500 police personnel were deployed at the site.
