Sridhar Vembu, the co-founder and CEO of Zoho, has reiterated that the company is not in a hurry to go public. In a recent post on X, he shared insights into why Zoho prefers to stay private and focus on long-term innovation.
### No Rush to Go Public
Vembu explained that some of Zoho’s key projects, such as Arattai, wouldn’t have been possible under the financial pressures faced by publicly listed companies. Describing Arattai as a “hopelessly foolish” project, he admitted even employees were skeptical about its success. Despite that, the company chose to pursue it without the constraints of short-term profitability.
### Engineering Focus and Commitment to India’s Tech Landscape
The decision to develop projects like Arattai stems from Zoho’s belief in building strong engineering capabilities in India. Vembu emphasized,
“We built it because we felt we need that kind of engineering capability in Bharat. We need a lot more of such capabilities in Bharat and we are on it.”
This highlights Zoho’s ongoing commitment to strengthening India’s tech ecosystem through innovative product development.
### Long-Range R&D Initiatives
Vembu also revealed that Zoho is actively investing in long-term research and development across several advanced technology domains — including compilers, databases, operating systems, security, hardware, chip design, robotics, and artificial intelligence.
He shared that the company has backed several R&D-intensive firms where immediate profitability isn’t the goal. “Zoho is a kind of an industrial research lab that also makes money to fund itself,” he explained.
### Frugality and Sustainability at the Core
Highlighting Zoho’s cultural philosophy, Vembu noted that the leadership team lives a frugal lifestyle similar to that of ISRO scientists and engineers. This approach ensures resources are focused on innovation and sustainable, long-term growth rather than chasing short-term profits.
He described this mindset as the “essence of Bharat” and drew a comparison to Japan’s developmental model, emphasizing discipline, persistence, and systematic growth.
