Sridhar Vembu, the co-founder and CEO of Zoho, has once again made it clear that the company is not rushing to go public. In a recent post on X (formerly Twitter), he explained how some of Zoho’s ambitious projects, like Arattai, would have been difficult to pursue under the financial pressures typical of public companies.

Vembu called Arattai a “hopelessly foolish” project, acknowledging that even Zoho employees were skeptical about its chances of success. However, the company chose to proceed with it as part of a broader commitment to building strong engineering capabilities in India.

### Engineering Focus & Commitment to India’s Tech Landscape

Vembu emphasized that the decision to develop projects like Arattai came from a firm belief in nurturing engineering talent in Bharat. “We built it because we felt we need that kind of engineering capability in Bharat. We need a lot more of such capabilities in Bharat and we are on it,” he stated.

### Long-Range R&D Initiatives

Zoho is actively engaged in long-term research and development across several cutting-edge technology domains, including compilers, databases, operating systems, security, hardware, chip design, robotics, and artificial intelligence.

Vembu revealed that the company has invested in numerous R&D-intensive startups and projects where immediate profitability is not expected. “Zoho is a kind of an industrial research lab that also makes money to fund itself,” he explained.

### Frugality and Sustainability at Zoho

Highlighting Zoho’s unique culture, Vembu noted that the company’s leadership team adopts a frugal lifestyle similar to that of scientists and engineers at ISRO. This approach allows them to allocate maximum resources towards innovation and long-term growth rather than chasing short-term profits.

He described this frugality as the “essence of Bharat” and compared it to Japan’s developmental model, stressing its importance in building sustainable, world-class technology enterprises.
