The Congress party has strongly criticized the central government for its handling of the recent protests in Ladakh, which tragically resulted in the death of an ex-serviceman.

Jairam Ramesh, Congress’s communications in-charge, identified the deceased as Tsewang Tharchin, who had served at the Siachen Glacier and fought valiantly in the Kargil War. “Tsewang Tharchin, an ex-serviceman, had served at the Siachen Glacier and fought valiantly in the Kargil War. His father too had served in the Indian Army,” Ramesh shared on X.

### Details of the Protest

According to Ramesh, Tharchin was “protesting peacefully” for Ladakh’s inclusion in the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution when he was killed. He described the incident as a matter of “deepest anguish and outrage.”

The unrest has continued to grip the region, with a curfew imposed in Leh for the sixth consecutive day following violent protests last week. Besides Tharchin, three other victims were identified: Stanzin Namgyal (24), Jigmet Dorjay (25), and Rinchen Dadul (21).

### Security Measures

Authorities have maintained a strict security clampdown in the region. Mobile internet services remain suspended, and prohibitory orders banning the assembly of five or more people are in place across major parts of Ladakh, including Kargil.

Over 60 individuals have been detained, including prominent climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, who was taken into custody under the National Security Act and transferred to Jodhpur jail in Rajasthan. Two councilors are also among those detained.

### Security Review and Ongoing Situation

Lieutenant Governor Kavinder Gupta is set to chair a high-level meeting at Raj Bhavan on Monday to review the security situation.

The recent protests, demanding statehood and Sixth Schedule inclusion for Ladakh, turned violent last Wednesday, resulting in injuries to around 150 people. The unrest also saw the torching of the BJP office and the Ladakh Hill Council Secretariat by protestors.

As the situation unfolds, authorities continue to enforce stringent security and curfew measures to restore normalcy in the region.
