October marks the beginning of the autumn and winter meteor shower season, which culminates in December’s spectacular Geminids. This week, stargazers can look forward to the Draconids meteor shower, peaking on October 8.
### What to Expect
While the Draconids is not considered a major meteor shower event, it is particularly observer-friendly. Unlike most meteor showers that peak during the early morning hours, the Draconids reach their peak in the early evening. This means you can enjoy the show without having to stay up late.
The radiant point—the spot in the sky from where the meteors appear to originate—is highest around nightfall. This makes viewing easier, as the meteors will be visible soon after sunset.
### Viewing Tips
The Draconids are known for their slow-moving, graceful meteors. Occasionally, the shower can produce hundreds of meteors per hour, though this varies each year.
This year, a waning moon may slightly interfere with visibility, washing out some of the fainter meteors. For the best viewing experience, find a dark, open area away from city lights.
After sunset, look towards the north, specifically near the Draco constellation, which is where the meteors will appear to radiate from.

### The Comet Connection
The intensity of the Draconids meteor shower is closely tied to the proximity of comet 21P/Giacobini-Zinner. This comet orbits the sun every 6.6 years, and when its closest approach coincides with the meteor shower, it can result in a spectacular meteor storm.
The comet was last closest to the sun in March 2025, which could mean a more active Draconids display this year.
