PHOTOS: Harvest Moon, first supermoon of 2025, rises over California

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — The moon appeared larger and brighter in the night sky over California Monday night during the first supermoon event of the year.

A supermoon is a full moon that is at its closest point in its orbit around Earth. October’s supermoon is unique as it occurs closest to the start of the autumnal equinox. This particular full moon is called the Harvest Moon because farmers historically relied on its moonlight to harvest their crops late into the night.

Residents of San Diego County were treated to the bright and beautiful sight of the Harvest Moon shining prominently in the night sky on Monday. Below, you can see dazzling photos submitted to FOX 5/KUSI by viewers capturing this stunning celestial event.

The next supermoon will rise over San Diego County on Wednesday, November 5, at 5:19 a.m. Don’t miss the chance to witness this spectacular lunar phenomenon again soon!
