**Mumbai Metro Line-3 Final Phase Inaugurated; Navi Mumbai International Airport Also Launched**
Mumbai: Prime Minister Narendra Modi virtually inaugurated the final phase of Mumbai Metro Line-3 on Wednesday, marking the completion of the city’s first fully underground metro corridor. The newly inaugurated 10.99-km Phase 2B stretch runs from Acharya Atre Chowk to Cuffe Parade, completing the 33.5-km Aqua Line. Passenger services on this stretch are set to begin from October 9.
The Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC) will operate the corridor, which extends from Cuffe Parade in the south to Aarey JVLR in the north. This final phase adds 11 stations, bringing the total number of stations on the line to 27. Two earlier phases of the corridor are already operational.
During the event held in Navi Mumbai, Prime Minister Modi also inaugurated the Navi Mumbai International Airport, highlighting that these projects will significantly enhance Mumbai’s connectivity and stand as symbols of a ‘Viksit Bharat’ (Developed India).
Emphasizing the role of infrastructure in improving citizens’ convenience, Modi noted that the new airport will connect Maharashtra’s farmers to global markets in Europe and West Asia. This connectivity will enable the swift export of fresh produce, reduce costs for small and medium enterprises, and boost regional economic growth by attracting investment and fostering new businesses.
According to the MMRC, the Metro Line-3 corridor is expected to reduce the load on local trains by approximately 15% in the relevant sections over the coming months. The project is also projected to deliver significant environmental benefits, including a daily reduction of 6.65 lakh vehicular trips and fuel savings of 3.54 lakh litres per day.
This is estimated to result in a 35% reduction in traffic congestion, leading to lower noise and air pollution levels across Mumbai. The fare structure for the metro has been set with a minimum ticket price of Rs 10 and a maximum of Rs 70 for travel along the entire route.
The entire 33.5-km corridor was constructed at a total cost of Rs 37,276 crore and features a design speed of 95 km/h. Currently, 31 trains (rakes) are in service, with trains expected at intervals of every five minutes during peak hours.
Metro Line-3 serves as a vital link, connecting over 30 educational institutions, 13 hospitals, 14 religious sites, and more than 30 recreational facilities across Mumbai.
With the completion of the final phase, the entire metro line now runs seamlessly from Aarey JVLR in the north to Cuffe Parade in the south, ready to serve the public and transform urban commuting in Mumbai.
